As CBD is known to have potential in helping with insomnia, many people ask the question of whether it will cause you to feel tired. The connection with marijuana doesn’t help with this confusion, because the high that comes from marijuana is often accompanied by drowsiness. So does CBD have heavy sedative effects?
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a botanical extract from the stalks and seeds of the hemp plant. It is one of many cannabinoids that have been identified in the cannabis plant, and it interacts with receptors in the body’s central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as the immune system, to alter the way neurotransmitters are released. CBD is non-intoxicating, meaning it won’t adversely impact your coordination or reaction time in any way.
But does it make you tired?
CBD elicits natural responses by interacting with your body’s endocannabinoid system. This is a cell-signalling system that keeps a number of physiological functions in balance, and impacts on mood, appetite, memory, immunity and, importantly, sleep. CBD stimulates this system to help achieve homeostasis in the body, which helps to improve sleep quality.
Nothing in CBD elicits the intense sedative effects of marijuana. CBD doesn’t contain high levels of THC, which is the major intoxicant that causes the high associated with marijuana, so your body won’t respond in the same way. Having said that, different people react in different ways to CBD, and though most people report feeling more energised and alert, there are some who experience more of a soothing calmness and relaxed state. There are also plenty of people who feel no immediate sensation, but notice a general sense of improved energy in the day and better sleep at night. If CBD oil does make you feel relaxed, you may choose to take it in the evening before going to bed.
The relationship between CBD and sleep
CBD doesn’t, as a rule, cause sedation. However, the stimulation of the endocannabinoid system can naturally promote a more healthy sleep cycle. By augmenting vital processes of the body, CBD may help to keep a number of functions in perfect equilibrium. So if you use CBD regularly, you may experience effects that come as a result of a more active endocannabinoid system. This means you could find yourself feeling more alert and energised during the day AND more relaxed and able to sleep well at night. It’s a win-win!
