Can you use CBD to help COVANXIETY?

Covanxiety aka anxiety related to COVID-19 can stem from countless sources – financial, apocalyptic, lack of human contact, overall impending doom, loss and illness of loved ones, quarantined with an abuser, lack of sunlight and exercise – the list goes on.

Anxiety is already a massive mental health issue and now with coronavirus, the initial research is concerning. The Mental Health Foundation in partnership with the Institute of Public Health at the University of Cambridge found that at the outbreak of the pandemic millions of Britons “felt, panicked, afraid and unprepared”. Leading psychiatrists and psychologists have warned of the crisis having a “profound” effect on people’s mental health.

Another survey by YoungMinds found that 83% of young people with mental health needs reported that their mental health had gotten worse since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Searches for CBD have increased during the period as a reputable and proven form of plant medicine to help alleviate anxiety and of course, raise immunity. CBD brand Trip — which makes CBD cold brews and oils — reports that its sales have doubled since March 23, and it has witnessed a 300 per cent increase in website traffic engagement.

In a double-blind study from 2019, 37 Japanese teenagers with social anxiety disorder (SAD) received 300 mg of CBD oil or a placebo every day for four weeks. The teens were assessed with surveys used to diagnose and measure SAD symptoms. The anti-anxiety properties of CBD reduced symptoms aligned with the disorder, providing relief comparable to Paroxetine, a drug commonly used to treat the condition. Therefore, it is absolutely proven (alongside tonnes of prior research) that CBD can help with anxiety related or unrelated to the current pandemic.
